BAGHDAD, November 10 – An horrible suicide attack on a restaurant in Baghdad claimed 33 deadly victims today as well as dozens wounded. The restaurant which was a favorite among local police was attacked around 9:45AM, a time at which most police officers stop by for breakfast. Among the bodies were seven police officers, 26 civilians found certain death in the bombing.
This is one of the worst attacks in months in Baghdad, while authorities reported Baghdad becomes safer because of the military operations at the Syrian border, two suicide bombers entered the restaurant and wreaked havoc with their explosives.
The attack was also claimed by Al-Qaeda, shortly after the bombings in Amman, Jordan. It seems that although military actions are occurring more frequently the enemy is still not exhausted or even slowed down by the extensive operations.
In Saddam Hussein’s hometown, Tikrit, seven people were killed by a car bombing when they lined up for application at an military recruitment center. Most of them were former officers under Hussein’s reign and were invited to apply yet again to reinforce the troops.
In a town near the Iranian border the bodies of 27 shot civilians were found. It is not apparent who is responsible for this but many believe Sunni or Shiite death squads are responsible for the ever-increasing occurrence of bodies found throughout the country.
LONDON, November 9 – Prime Minister Tony Blair of the United Kingdom suffered a costly defeat today at the vote on a new anti-terror law. The proposal was rejected by the House of Commons while Blair earlier stressed that his personal authority was at stake.
The proposed law which would allow terrorism suspects to be detained for 90 days without any charge was voted off by 322 – 291 which means a majority of 31 votes. Of those 322 no-votes 41 were from Blair’s own party, the Labour Party. This was actually the first defeat since Tony Blair took charge of the Labour party in 1997. Apparently many of his supporters have given up on him, even in his own party.
Many believe that this defeat is thanks to his misleading campaign for the war in Iraq in 2003. The country went to war on inconclusive and even false information provided by the security services, whether Blair knew this is still unknown but widely accepted. Fear struck that this new advice from security services to develop such a law would lead to a similar, unwanted outcome. It also resembles the lack of trust in the current leader of the UK in light of future elections, it is almost inevitable that Blair will not manage to win the coming elections in his current state.
Current laws warrant for 14 days of detention without any charges and security services asked for an expansion because the new form of terrorism facing the country would warrant this. Lawyers and Labour members immediately showed concern for civil rights, claiming that this would turn Britain into a police state. It seems that this concern has won, in combination with the lack of trust in Blair’s affairs.
BAGHDAD, November 8 – The situation for the lawyers in the Saddam Hussein case is growing exceedingly worrisome. Today two lawyers participating in the trial were ambushed with one of them dying due to fatal wounds. The other attorney was badly wounded from the attack.
The lawyer who was killed represented one of Saddam’s codefendants, the former Vice President of Iraq Taha Yassin Ramadan. The man, Adel al-Zubeidi, was killed when an Opel filled with gunmen pulled alongside of there vehicle in a Sunni neighborhood. Automatic weapons sounded and the two lawyers were caught in a rain of bullets.
The other defense attorneys have announced that they will not cooperate with resuming the trial unless they move the trial to a neutral country where sufficient security can be guaranteed. Khalil al-Dulaimi, the main lawyer in the Saddam case has announced that they will not recognize the resuming date of the trial which is the 28th of November. He has called upon the international community to intervene in this matter as the situation is unbearable. He also stated that he believes the attack was carried out by the government because the vehicle used is allegedly a government vehicle. He asked the Secretary-General of the United Nations to investigate the matter and even send a committee to get to the bottom of this.
Only two weeks ago another defense lawyer in Saddam Hussein’s trial was abducted and not long there after executed by unknown gunmen. Today’s incident only adds to the suspicion that a fair trial cannot be held in Iraq because of the insurgent attacks and governmental impotency.
PARIS, November 7 – France is literally on fire. Sunday night was one of the worst nights of riots in a series of ten subsequent nights. The riots not only reached the center of Paris but spread throughout the country and even to neighboring countries.
On Sunday night more than 1,400 vehicles were torched during the riots cumulating to an enormous material damages. Public buildings like schools, churches and other facilities were set on fire causing even more damage. The first deadly casualty due to the riots was announced shortly after the Sunday night bash between police and rioters. An older man beaten by muslim youngsters in one of the suburbs of Paris this week has died in the hospital due to the injury sustained. At least ten policemen were injured during the fights last night including two sever casualties due to shotgun fire from the rioting crowd.
About 390 people were arrested all over the country as over 250 towns joined in the chaos and mayhem. Even neighboring countries suffered copycat behavior, Belgian authorities announced that five cars near Brussels central station were set on fire last night and German media say cars were torched in Berlin and Bremen.
Chirac meanwhile announced severe measures to prevent any further unrest and provide safety to the general public. There have been talks about curfews and even more police forces in the main cities.
HARRISBURG PA, November 6 – The epic battle between the evolution theory and creationism has struck in Pennsylvania where a federal judge is now weighing arguments from both sides on this matter.
The Dover Area School District changed their policy early last year to also include the theory of intelligent design into the education. This majority decision of six against three votes has turned into a battle ever since. The schoolbooks now include a statement which points out that the evolution theory of Darwin is just a theory and has unexplainable gaps. It furthermore refers to books on creationism for further information.
The legal representative of the opposing families blatantly stated that this policy change is simply the board’s desire to teach creationism next to evolution. He also noted that intelligent design is simply a scientific cover for creationism, which boils down to the story of The Bible.
The defense concluded their arguments with a testimony by microbiology professor Scott Minnich of the Idaho University who stated that intelligent design is a much overlooked theory and goes against the consensus in the world of empirical research. Science is not a democratic process though, and this theory is just as likely as the evolution theory.
Even President Bush added to the battle by stating that he believes both theories should be taught in school to keep an healthy balance.

BAGHDAD, November 5 – The U.S. military and Iraqi forces have resumed operations to secure the Syrian border into Iraq to prevent Al-Qaeda from smuggling funds, resources and insurgents through the region.
Operation Steel Curtain is designed to establish a safe perimeter in the Euphrates River valley to disable Al-Qaeda’s possibility to smuggle new fighters and resources through the border. In the town of Husaybah four explosions in the early morning announced the beginning of the operation. Warplanes or helicopters are likely to be responsible for these big explosions. Right after that 2,500 U.S. army forces and 1,000 Iraqi army forces swept the town destroying insurgent strongholds and securing the area.
This small Sunni town near the border of Iraq is the home of approximately 30,000 citizens but many already left the town during the last operation by the joint forces. Al-Qaeda is extremely effective at intimidating citizens into refusing cooperation with the U.S. military and thus continuing their every-day operations.
The U.S. military also released a statement in which they indicate that two U.S. soldiers died by roadside bombs on Friday in other parts of the country. Roadside bombs are currently the main cause for U.S. deaths in Iraq.
