Katrina another windfall for the President’s friends?

As Newsinsider reported a few days ago there is worrying signs that George Bush’s cronyism is threatening the Katrina relief effort. With accountability and honesty being the first victims of any of George Bush’s projects, we can only hope Government money and donor funds don’t go missing as they have in Iraq.As The Huffington Post reports,
“The feeling that the Katrina relief effort is going to be Iraq all over again is unavoidable when you look at the list of the companies already being awarded clean up and reconstruction contracts. It’s that old gang from Baghdad: Halliburton, Bechtel, Fluor, and the Shaw Group (which has a tasteful notice on its website saying “Hurricane Recovery Projects — Apply Here!”). Together again. A veritable moveable feast of crony capitalism.” More..

Iraqi Police and British Forces Face Off

Basra, the setting of a startling battle

BASRA, September 19 – On Monday the sounds of gunfire did not seize in the city of Basra. This 1.5 million people port city is the scene of a clash between Iraqi policemen and the British Forces. While Western military spokesmen tried to divert from the situation by saying the British and the Iraqi’s are on the same side nothing was less true.

Hell broke loose as the Iraqi police arrested two Britons on the charge of contemplating terrorist attacks. British Forces immediately tried to free the two and an unpleasant battle erupted. One British armored vehicle went up in flames after being set on fire by Iraqi policemen, no deaths or injuries have been reported yet but the fights are still going on as I type.

The house of Basra’s governor was also attacked in this chaos, mortar rounds and grenades were fired but nobody got hurt. Shiite militiamen are being held responsible for this, it is said they were trying to force the governor into releasing two prominent members of this group believed to be under the command of Shiite cleric Sadr.

Apart from this mini-war the body of a freelance journalist was found in Basra. The man was handcuffed and killed with a shot to the head after being kidnapped on Sunday from his home. Since this May at least 65 assassinations have been carried out in Basra and the situation is only escalating because of the extreme violence against Shiites the last few days.

Campaign of Violence Continues in Iraq

Death toll rises as we enter fourth day of violence

BAGHDAD, September 18 – Saturday marked the fourth day of the violence campaign the Sunni insurgents started earlier this week. Leaving dead bodies throughout the country the death toll rose to just over 250 this week. Al Qaeda leader in Iraq Al-Zarqawi has stated that this all-out war is a response to the “ethnic cleansing” in Tal Afar by the U.S. and Iraqi troops. Tal Afar was widely considered an insurgent stronghold and a tactical transportation village to get insurgents into Iraq from Syria. Al-Zarqawi depicted this clean-sweep as targeted ethnic cleansing by the Shiite majority, this is just another card he played in his efforts to start a civil war and radicalize Sunnis throughout Iraq.

In a village just east of Baghdad the bloodiest attack of the day took place. While many villagers gathered at the outdoor market to buy food and mingle a car bomb struck the market and killed over 20 people. Cars and shops were obliterated by the explosion. While police officers tried to seal off the area and aid the victims insurgents targeted the area with mortar fire and killed a few more people.

In other small towns men were found tortured and shot totaling the body count for Saturday to 40 deaths. There’s no end in sight yet as Al-Zarqawi’s goal only comes closer by aggravating the Shiite majority.

Bush and Putin Disagree on Iran’s Nuclear Development

What a surprise!

WASHINGTON, September 17 – Russian President Putin and President Bush held a meeting at the White House to publicly show their friendship is unaffected by the recent world events. They also came together to show Iran they mean business. Putin specifically mentioned he does not want Iran to become a nuclear power. Putin however did not agree on toughening up the approach taken towards Iran, he feels diplomacy is in place as the new leadership has showed no signs that these paths are off limits.

He urged that the diplomatic solutions are far from being exhausted and he feels there is still a way to manage this situation without any hostility. “We will undertake all steps necessary to settle all these problems and issues, not aggravate them. . . . We do not want our careless actions to lead to the development of events along the North Korean variant,” Putin said. Needless to say he does have a point, the efforts to “strong-arm” Pyongyang have been fruitless.

Juicy fact is that the Russian government is actually helping Iran build a civilian nuclear plant, Bush of course opposed to this but Putin stated that the Iranian President assured him that they have no intentions to produce nuclear weapons.

Iraq Violence Demands 21 More Lives

All-out war has begun

BAGHDAD, September 16 – It seems a new phase in the Iraqi war has begun, an all-out no holds barred war of the Sunni militants against the Shiite majority. Earlier this week about 180 people were killed in explosions and attacks throughout Baghdad and its’ surrounding towns and today 21 new bodies were added to that figure making this week’s death toll just over 200. This is the third day in the violence campaign started by the Sunnis, they are targeting Shiites because they are the majority in the community as well as in the National Assembly.

The worst attack occurred in a town just north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber in car detonated his explosives as the Shiites left their mosque. Nine people were killed in this attack. Just south of Baghdad a local mayor and his four bodyguards were assassinated by gunmen, elsewhere a cleric of a Shiite mosque got shot and killed. In Baghdad local labourers looking for a day job were targeted yet again after a bloody explosion earlier this week. Today a drive-by shooting took place killing three men and wounding another twelve. In the small town of Haswa three police officers were killed by a car bomb. That makes the total count 21.

So far Al Qaeda has claimed most attacks, first to retaliate the clean-sweep of their insurgent stronghold in Tal Afar but now it seems they have gone to full war. Rough days are ahead as it’s not likely that the violence will stop anytime soon.
